In the 1982 movie Flykt i natten, set in 1978 East Germany, two families, the Strelzyks and the Wetzels, plan to escape the Communist regime and make their way to the West. Peter Strelzyk, a resourceful family man, devises an audacious plan: to construct a homemade air balloon large enough to carry both families across the heavily fortified East-West border.
The border between East and West Germany is a treacherous zone, equipped with watchtowers, guard dogs, barbed wire, alarming sensors, searchlights, and constant patrols. There are even rumors that certain areas of the border might be mined. With all other options seemingly impossible, crossing by air becomes the families' only hope.
The Strelzyks and Wetzels embark on their dangerous endeavor, first by obtaining the necessary materials and building the balloon in secret. Each step of the process is fraught with tension, and they must remain cautious to avoid detection by the authorities. Time is of the essence as they strive to complete the balloon before their planned escape date.
As the families face numerous challenges and setbacks, including close calls with the border guards, their determination and ingenuity are put to the test. Will they manage to launch the balloon and fly to freedom, or will their dream of a better life remain elusive?
