The Conspirator

In the wake of Abraham Lincoln's assassination, seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President, the Vice-Presi...dent, and the Secretary of State. The lone woman charged, Mary Surratt, 42, owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks. Against the ominous back-drop of post-Civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer, Frederick Aiken, a 28-year-old Union war-hero, reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt before a military tribunal. As the trial unfolds, Aiken realizes his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son. Show More

scapegoat to divert attention from the true conspirators. Despite his initial reluctance and facing overwhelming public opinion against his defense of a supposed traitor, Aiken becomes determined to uncover the truth and seek justice for his client.

As Aiken delves deeper into the case, he encounters numerous challenges and obstacles, including a biased military tribunal, witnesses with questionable credibility, and the growing pressure from both the government and the public to secure a guilty verdict. With the help of his colleague, Reverdy Johnson, and key witnesses, Aiken begins to uncover evidence of a larger conspiracy that involves high-ranking officials within the government.

As the trial progresses, Aiken faces personal and professional turmoil, questioning his own beliefs and values in the pursuit of justice. In a tense and emotionally charged climax, he delivers a powerful closing argument, passionately arguing for Surratt's innocence and highlighting the government's attempt to suppress the truth.

The Conspirator is a gripping historical drama that sheds light on a lesser-known aspect of the aftermath of Lincoln's assassination. Directed by Robert Redford, the film combines superb performances, meticulous period detail, and thought-provoking themes to create a compelling narrative about justice, integrity, and the power of standing up for what is right.
