The narrative explores the deep-rooted racism and cruelty inflicted upon enslaved individuals by white slave owners. Solomon experiences both unspeakable cruelty from his malevolent owner, as well as unexpected acts of compassion from fellow slaves and white individuals who are against slavery.
As Solomon endures the unimaginable horrors of his new life, his spirit remains unbroken. He refuses to let go of his dignity and continues to fight for survival and freedom. In the twelfth year of his enslavement, he meets a Canadian abolitionist who becomes a lifeline for him, forever altering the course of his life.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave is a poignant and visceral exploration of the dark period in American history. The film showcases an incredible cast, including standout performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, Lupita Nyong'o as Patsey, and Michael Fassbender as the sadistic slave owner.
