A Better Life (2011) follows the story of Carlos Galindo, a hardworking Mexican single parent who lives in California. Carlos works as a gardener to provide for his fourteen-year-old son, Luis, and has always feared that Luis would be drawn into the dangerous local gang culture. In an effort to improve their lives, Carlos buys a truck for his work using money borrowed from his sister.
However, things take a turn for the worse when a new employee steals the truck from Carlos. Determined to retrieve it, Carlos and Luis embark on a journey to track down the thief, only to find out that the truck has been sold. Throughout their search, father and son strengthen their bond and support each other.
As they eventually recover the vehicle from the impound lot, Carlos inadvertently attracts the attention of the police, jeopardizing his future in America when his illegal immigrant status comes to light. Carlos now faces the uncertainty of deportation, which could potentially rip him away from his son.
