In Adaptation (2002), a lovelorn screenwriter named Charlie Kaufman is struggling to adapt Susan Orlean's book, The Orchid Thief, into a screenplay. Plagued by writer's block and consumed by self-doubt, Charlie feels overwhelmed as he tries to create a conventional narrative out of the book's complex and non-linear structure.
As Charlie becomes increasingly desperate, he reaches out to his more confident and commercially successful twin brother, Donald, who offers him advice on how to make the script more marketable. However, Charlie finds himself resenting Donald's success and questions his own abilities.
