In the 1999 movie Deep Blue Sea, a businessman invests $200 million in a project aimed at combatting Alzheimer's disease. Medical biologist Susan McAlester discovers a controversial method to genetically enhance the brains of sharks, enabling the extraction of disease-fighting enzymes. However, the experiment takes an unexpected turn when the sharks become highly intelligent and develop a desire for freedom.

The sharks, no longer content with captivity and injections, plot their escape and head towards the open sea. As they wreak havoc on the underwater facility, a team of scientists and their crew find themselves trapped and struggling to survive.
