After graduating from high school 19 year old Göran goes to his uncle Anders's farm in the countryside for recreation. It's summer and a lot of work to do at the farm, but he, the city student, isn't accustomed to that. He falls in love with 17 year old Kerstin, and suddenly he is very engaged in country life. Göran is a foreigner, but he quickly blends in with the village youth. They are in a bitter conflict with the vicar, who condemns all their activities as immoral. Married couple Lee and Tim, a part-time yoga instructor and a public school phys ed teacher respectively, jump at the opportunity to sit at the secluded Los Angeles hills house of an actress acquaintance for two weeks as a mini-vacation for themselves and their three year old son, Jude. Max, however, may have other interests in digging besides finding buried things. Meanwhile, Lee has needed this weekend away from her husband, and time away from Jude - Grandma and Pop Pop who have agreed to babysit - to re-energize herself and evaluate her current life, which she feels is not her own. By the time Lee and Tim come back together at the end of the weekend, they may have a different understanding of their relationship and their life together with Jude.

Oskar's mother, Marlene Koenig, upon learning of a Jewish woman in Oskar's heart, encourages him to pursue her, she willing to provide the resources to do so, which, if Oskar accepts her offer, would place both their lives at risk. Even if Oskar and Rachel were ever to encounter each other again, their experiences and the circumstances of the war may affect if they can join together as a couple, the war which may place them on opposing sides of a kill or be killed scenario.
