In Garden State, Andrew Largeman, a semi-successful television actor, struggles with the emotional baggage imposed by his controlling and psychiatrist father. Andrew's relationship with his father leads him to believe that he is responsible for his mother's wheelchair-bound existence. Determined to break free from his father's influence, he decides to stop taking the medication that his father and doctor have convinced him he needs.

As Andrew begins to experience life without the numbing effects of medication, he starts to see the world in a new light. He allows himself to feel the pain and emotions he had long suppressed. Along the way, he meets a girl who also carries her own set of problems.

Together, Andrew and this girl embark on a journey of self-discovery and emotional healing. They form a genuine connection, finding solace and understanding in each other's company.
