In the waning years of the 1920s, the pro football league is struggling to survive. Dodge Connolly, a charismatic player, hatches a plan to save the sport: recruiting Carter Rutherford, a college football sensation and war hero. Dodge hopes that Carter's fame and integrity will bring credibility and much-needed attention to their struggling league.

Carter reluctantly agrees to join Dodge's team, the Duluth Bulldogs. As the charming war hero becomes the face of the league, a love triangle develops between Carter, Dodge, and a smart and sassy newspaper reporter, Lexie Littleton.
