In Persian Lessons, a compelling historical drama, a young Jewish man named Gilles, played by Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, brilliantly disguises himself as an Iranian to escape execution in a concentration camp during World War II. Gilles is captured while trying to flee Europe and is sent to a detention camp where Nazis rule with an iron fist. When asked about his identity, Gilles claims to be Persian and speaks fluent Farsi, even though he cannot prove it.
To substantiate his deception, Gilles begins to teach Persian to his captors, particularly one particularly ruthless Nazi officer, Koch, played by Lars Eidinger. Gilles' life depends on convincing the officer of his faux-identity, and the lessons become a desperate gambit for survival. As Gilles' knowledge of the Persian language is put to the test, tensions rise, and a profound power struggle ensues between the two men.
