In the mining town of Harmony, a drilling accident is caused by the son of the owner, Tom Hanniger. The mine collapses, burying six miners alive. The rescue team finds only Harry Warden alive, but in coma, and the other miners murdered by his pickax, and they conclude that Harry killed them to save oxygen for himself. On Valentine's Day, Harry awakes from his coma in the local hospital, and he kills twenty-two people, including a group of teenagers that are partying in the mine. Harry is killed by the deputy, but the only survivors are Tom Hanniger, his girlfriend Sarah, their friend Axel Palmer and his girlfriend Irene. Ten years later, Tom returns to Harmony after the death of his father. Tom has decided to sell the Hanniger Mine, and finds that Sarah has married Axel, who is now the local sheriff, and they have a son named Noah. On Valentine's Day, Harry Warden also returns, seeking revenge against those that had escaped his pickax in the past, and Tom is accused by Axel and other locals, who in turn makes accusations against Axel.

When in 1941 Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, their troops quickly besieged Leningrad. Foreign journalists are evacuated but one of them, Kate Davies, is presumed dead and misses the plane. Alone in the city she is helped by Nina Tsvetnova a young and idealist police officer and together they will fight for their own survival and the survival of the people in the besieged Leningrad.

Mischa smuggled drugs in her cello case unbeknown to her but forensics reveal an unexpected link between victim and killer,giving the reason for the murder as personal. Irina is moved to a houseboat where she proves her worth in a gun battle between the police and her pursuers.

Female police lieutenant Phoebe McNamara is a success as a hostage negotiator. She and their toddler daughter Carly live with her devoted, but agoraphobic mother, Essie. Disagreement of policy implementation by a uniformed cop during a hostage negotiation, leads to a grim feud with one of them, cocky Arnie Meeks. Captain David McVee and businessman-philanthropist Duncan Swift, her patient new boy friend, side with her and the assumption Meeks is behind a violence wave targeting her, but that proves dead-wrong.

Priest Henrik Nordstrom is shot outside a hostel which he has been using to have sex with his lover Lotta, wife of Peter Unell. Unell is managing director of a firm Prominent Care,which exports hospital apparatus to Africa and the priest was involved with it. Henrik's pious wife Asa was aware of her husband's affair. Lotta tells Wallander she was about to leave her insensitive husband for the priest and candid photos of her with Nordstrom are found,along with the murder weapon in Peter Unell's house. As he stands trial for murder Wallander is convinced he has been framed and sets out to prove it.

Ronnie Barnhardt lives with his alcoholic mother.
