Bye Bye Blue Bird

In Bye Bye Blue Bird, Rannvá and Barba, two friends who have lived abroad for several years, return to their native country, the Faroe Islands. They come back with a sense of superiority, dressed in outrageous colorful clothes, and consider themselves to have outgrown the small island community. However, their real motive for the visit is to address unresolved family issues.

Their plans quickly unravel, and they find themselves fleeing from the answers they were seeking. Along the way, they are rescued by Rúni, a local fisherman driving an eccentric car adorned with zebra covers, flower lights, and a stuffed crocodile. As they travel together, they encounter various characters, including a fallen rock singer, missionary grandparents, and a Jesus wannabe.

Rúni seems to always be running errands and meeting people. As the journey progresses, his mysterious business becomes apparent, and Rannvá and Barba are left wondering about his true nature. The film explores themes of hypocrisy, shattered dreams, unfortunate circumstances, and self-discovery.

Bye Bye Blue Bird tackles these themes with a blend of poignant sadness and satirical humor, reflecting the complexity of real life. As the characters navigate their way through the Faroe Islands, skeletons from the past emerge, revealing hidden truths and forcing them to confront their own realities.
